    When CRC-Tdh workers met with Abdullah* for the first time he could not walk. Whenever he wanted to go somewhere he used to take the support of a water tub and crawled behind it on the ground. His life was restricted only to a small muddy house that he would never be able to leave. Abdullah could not play with other children and was very frustrated about that. His personal hygienic condition was also terrible, because his trousers and clothes were always getting dirty with mud and dust while he was pushing the water tub or creeping on the ground.     Anwar* is an 11-year old street working boy who regularly participates in Aschiana activities. He attends every day the morning literacy classes and gets health education and life skills training. Additionally, he has excellent painting skills and enjoys the recreational activities organized by the Social Workers. In the afternoon he collects pieces of paper to bring a small income to his parents. His father is working as a wheel barrow carrier and does not earn enough money to support his whole family.     Thousands of children roam the dusty streets and grimy alleyways of Afghanistan, working to earn desperately needed money for their families. The sight of shabbily-dressed children, sometimes as young as three years old, is a common one around the military bases and shopping areas where they ply their trades under the blazing sun of summer or the biting cold of winter.Many sell merchandise -- chewing gum, magazines, or even International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) memorabilia. Others polish shoes, wash cars or dispense good luck from a can of burning herbs known as an "espand." Read more

    Midwife Naseema Qochi is easily recognized when she walks into the spartan health clinic nestled beside a rose garden in the dusty warrens of Qlia Bakhtyar. The health officer examining a small boy greets her warmly: Salaam alaikum. Qochi has helped three generations of women in this community give birth. “Naseema is the doctor,” a visiting midwife says by way of explaining Naseema’s primary role here and the respect she commands.     From the 3rd to the 10th of October 2011, the Child Rights Consortium / Tdh together with the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) and the Police Academy organized an advanced course to deepen the police academy trainers knowledge on child rights issues. The course took place in the Police Academy premises with 17 participants including one woman. It was facilitated by both Tdh Legal Adviser and the AIHRC unit trainer. Read more

    In the relentless heat of a summer’s day in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif, most people are trying to find some shade, but 11-year-old Mohammad Rafiq is walking the streets carrying a box full of shoe-shining equipment. Dripping with sweat, the boy asks passers-by, “Uncle, may I polish your shoes?” Although often rebuffed, he carries on walking undeterred, calling out, “Polish your shoes and slippers.” Read more

    On 7 September 2011, the Child Rights Consortium organized a roundtable on “restorative justice from a regional perspective” with several high-level representatives of the judicial, the government and the police. It was jointly facilitated by Tdh JJ Coordinator for the CRC in Afghanistan Mr. Fabrice Crégut and Tdh Regional Technical Advisor on Juvenile Justice Ms. Alice McGrath. Their presentations offered a vision of juvenile justice centred on three concepts: restorative justice, coordination between the different stakeholders and holistic approach. Read more

    “My father is dead and my uncle wanted to marry me by force to one guy but I don’t like that guy: so, I ran away from my home and contacted another boy. He took me to Jalalabad city and we spent one night in a hotel here. We wanted to go to Kabul but near Kabul bus station the police arrested us. They sent me to the Juvenile attorney and the boy to the adult prison. Now I am in JRC (Juvenile Rehabilitation Center, the Afghan prison for children) and the boy is in custody.” (16-year old girl in JRC) Read more
